iPhone Duplicates Album Missing? Why and How to Fix It

The Duplicates album only appears when two things are true: your iPhone has finished indexing your photo library, and that indexing found at least one exact duplicate. It also requires iOS 16 or later. Indexing only runs while the phone is locked and connected to power, and on a big library it can take up to a few days. If the album still never shows up, Apple's answer is simple: your iPhone has not identified any duplicates.

Where the Duplicates album should be

First, make sure you are looking in the right place, because Apple moved things around in iOS 18:

• iOS 18 and later: open Photos, tap Collections, then Utilities, then Duplicates.
• iOS 16 and 17: open Photos, go to the Albums tab, scroll down to Utilities, then tap Duplicates.

If Utilities is there but Duplicates is not listed inside it, the album genuinely is not on your phone yet. Here is why that happens.

Reason 1: indexing has not finished

This is the most common cause. Your iPhone has to scan the whole library before it can group duplicates, and Apple deliberately runs that scan only when the phone is locked and connected to power, so it never slows you down while you are using it.

Depending on library size and what else is running in the background, the process can finish quickly or take up to a few days. If you just updated iOS, restored from a backup, or imported a lot of photos, the clock starts over on the new content.

You can check progress: open Photos and scroll to the very bottom of your Library. If indexing is still running, a status message shows there.

Reason 2: you are not on iOS 16 or later

Duplicate detection shipped in iOS 16. On iOS 15 or earlier there is no Duplicates album at all, no matter how long you wait. Check Settings > General > About, and update under Settings > General > Software Update if you can.

Reason 3: your iPhone found no exact duplicates

The album is not a fixture of the Photos app. It only exists when there is something to put in it. Apple's support page says it plainly: if you do not see the Duplicates album, your iPhone has not identified any duplicates.

That sounds like good news, but there is a catch, which we get to below.

How to make indexing run

You cannot force the scan with a button, but you can give it the conditions it needs:

1. Plug your iPhone into power before bed.
2. Lock it and leave it alone overnight. Both conditions matter: locked and charging.
3. Repeat for two or three nights if your library is large.
4. Check Photos > Utilities each morning, and glance at the bottom of the Library for the status message.

Low Power Mode can defer background work, so charge past 80 percent or switch it off overnight if the album refuses to appear.

Two situations reset the waiting game. A new iPhone restored from backup has to index the whole library from scratch, so do not expect the album on day one. And a fresh batch of imported photos has to be scanned before any duplicates inside it can show up. In both cases the fix is the same: power, lock screen, patience.

Still no album? You probably have near-duplicates instead

Here is the catch. "No Duplicates album" does not mean your library is clean. It means there are no exact copies: same image, byte-for-byte or close to it. It is just answering a narrower question than the one you are asking.
