Why your iCloud is full of duplicate photos

iCloud Photos is a mirror, not a separate library. Whatever lands in your iPhone library syncs up, duplicates included. The usual sources:

• Saved copies. A friend AirDrops you a photo you already have, or you save the same image twice from WhatsApp or Messages.
• Edits and exports. Some apps save an edited photo as a new file next to the original.
• Imports and restores. Importing from an old backup, a camera, or a previous phone can re-add photos that were already there.
• Re-uploads. A photo goes out through a messaging app and comes back compressed, so now you have two versions of the same shot.

Merge exact duplicates from your iPhone

Since iOS 16, Photos scans your library for exact duplicates and collects them in a Duplicates album. To use it:

2. On iOS 18, tap Collections, then Utilities. On iOS 16 and 17, scroll down in the Albums tab to Utilities.
3. Tap Duplicates.
4. Tap Merge on each set, or Select All and merge everything at once.

Merging keeps the version with the highest image quality and combines the relevant data from the copies. The extra copies are removed and go to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days in case you change your mind.

The merge syncs to iCloud automatically

This is the part people miss. With iCloud Photos turned on, you do not need to clean iCloud separately. Apple's rule is simple: when you delete photos on one device, they are deleted everywhere you use iCloud Photos. The same applies to merges. Merge a duplicate set on your iPhone and the copies disappear from iCloud, your iPad, and your Mac.

The freed space shows up in your iCloud storage once Recently Deleted is emptied, either by you or automatically after 30 days. So a full cleanup is really three steps: merge or delete on your iPhone, let the sync run, then empty Recently Deleted.

Can I do this from a Mac instead?

Yes. The Photos app on Mac has its own Duplicates album in the sidebar, and it works the same way: review each set, merge, and the result syncs through iCloud Photos to your iPhone and iPad. If your library is huge, the Mac can be the more comfortable place to work through it, with a bigger screen and a real pointer.

What you cannot do is run the cleanup from a browser. Whether you start on iPhone or Mac, the duplicate detection lives in the Photos app, not in iCloud itself.

The catch: the built-in album only finds exact copies

Apple's Duplicates album matches exact duplicates and same-file copies.
