The reason is compression. WhatsApp re-compresses photos when they are sent: images are resized down and re-encoded as much smaller JPEG files. WhatsApp does not publish exact numbers, but independent measurements consistently land around 1600 pixels on the longest side at standard quality. Even the HD setting under Media upload quality still compresses, just less. So the photo your friend received and sent back is not the same file as your original. Different resolution, different file size, different pixels.

Apple's Duplicates album only matches exact duplicates and copies of the same file. A WhatsApp version of your photo is neither. It looks identical to your eye, but to Photos it is a different image, so it never gets flagged. That is why libraries full of WhatsApp copies show a near-empty Duplicates album.

How to clean up the existing backlog

Two passes work best, because you are dealing with two kinds of duplicates.

Pass 1: exact copies. Open Photos, go to Utilities, and tap Duplicates. This catches the cases where the identical file was saved twice, for example a photo saved from two different chats without re-compression in between. Merge what it finds.

Does deleting from Photos remove the chat copy?
